About My Soap

I’ve always loved learning old-fashioned crafts and skills, but soap making has been my passion for the last 15 years.  I create products that combine beauty and utility with good value. Soap is a simple necessity that we often take for granted, but I believe a good handmade soap that doesn’t dry your skin and smells fabulous is a daily pleasure that we all deserve.  People tell me that once they’ve tried my handmade soap they never want to go back to using commercial soaps again, because of the way their skin feels.

All bar soap is made by combining oils and sodium hydroxide (lye) in a process known as saponification. Properly made soap contains no residual lye, but it is rich in moisturizing glycerin.  To make your handmade soap last longer, please keep it in a dry soap dish that drains well, between uses.  My handmade soap uses absolutely no alcohol, preservatives, sodium laurel sulfate, petroleum by-products or commercially prepared bases.

Choosing a Soap

The choice of ingredients largely determines the qualities the finished bar of soap will have.  For example, traditional Castile soap is made of olive oil and has a slick, slippery, sparse lather, almost like a cleansing milk.  If you prefer your soap to make lots of bubbles, please choose any one of my other soaps.  They all contain emollient olive oil, along with other natural oils and vegetable butters,  formulated to be gentle and long-lasting with abundant creamy lather.

I have tried to describe the various soaps and their characteristics to the best of my ability, but the descriptions are not intended to be recommendations for medical conditions.

People frequently ask me what soap is best for their skin type.  I have tried to describe what I had in mind when designing each soap, and what I think that soap is good for, but everyone’s skin is different - I recommend that you try a few over time to decide which one is best for you.

Specialty Soaps

Hand Soap:  Soap with gently abrasive ingredients like coffee, pumice, ground loofah gourd or poppy seeds:  Ethiopian Coffee, Orange Blossom  Scrub, Botanical Scrub, Lemon Poppyseed.   $6.75 & $6

Old-fashioned “lye soap”: washday does not contain the extra oil that a gentle bath soap does so I don’t recommend that you bathe with it but it’s great for hand laundry and stains.  This is a traditional, very hard soap made with lard.  $3.50

Soapnuts (Sapindus mukorossi): A saponin-rich fruit native to India and Nepal that has many uses, from an  economical laundry washing product to a gentle and effective sulfate-free shampoo! Only 4 of the dried ”nuts” will clean up to 6 loads of laundry! They are biodegradable and non-polluting: the ultimate “green” cleanser! $12 for 250g (over ½ lb.) and $22 for 500g (over 1 lb.)  TOP
