Natural Hair Care

A growing number of people are looking at alternative hair care methods, whether from a desire to avoid ingredients like SLS or SLES, or simply to have a more "natural", less expensive and simpler routine. If you have been curious about shampoo bars and other simple but effective hair care products, these are some of the things I make.

What are Shampoo Bars?

Shampoo bars are a convenient, economical alternative to shampoo. Shea butter, coconut, castor and olive oils are blended with organic herbal extracts, silk, honey and sodium hydroxide and turned into soap. The "superfat" oil and essential oils are added before the soap is poured into molds. It is cut into bars and left to harden and cure completely. Shampoo bars last a long time if kept dry between uses. It makes a nice creamy lather that will leave your hair soft and clean and it doesn't contain any palm oil, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), preservatives or petroleum by-products. It works well for most types of hair and it's perfect for travel. You can read more about shampoo and shampoo bars on my FAQ.

Choose your Shampoo Bar:
There are four versions: the Original Shampoo Bar, scented with a lavender, rosemary, orange peel oil and ylang-ylang essential oil blend; Rosemary Mint, with a blend of Peppermint, Rosemary and Lavender essential oils; Unscented; and Neem & Tea Tree is made with jojoba oil, additional herbs, and scented with lavender, cedarwood, and tea tree oil.

To use, wet your hair and rub the shampoo bar over your scalp, lather and rinse well. To finish, you can use conditioner or a few drops of an appropriate hair oil.

Herbal Hair Oil

Traditional hair care uses oils to condition and make hair easier to style. I blend organic coconut oil with an extract of rosemary, nettle, Brahmi herb, and burdock root and combine it with macadamia nut oil, shea oil and Moroccan argan oil and scent it lightly with lavender essential oil. Just a few drops applied to damp or dry hair will help condition your hair without weighing it down or making it appear oily.  Preservative free. 2 ounce bottle.

A heavier application can be an overnight conditioning treatment. In that case you would wash your hair in the morning.

Conditioner Bar w/ Panthenol

New! An easy-to-use solid conditioner bar that eliminates plastic bottles and is perfect both for travel and every day use. Made with conditioning ingredients naturally derived from rapeseed and coconut oil, with Vitamin B-5, Baobab protein, shea butter, kokum butter, and cocoa butter. Scented with lavender essential oil. Helps eliminate frizz, define curls.

Oval 2.2 ounce bar is long-lasting. Use in place of liquid conditioner after shampooing, massage in and rinse out. Dry and style hair as usual.

Milk & Honey Deep Conditioning Treatment

New! A single use powder conditioner that must be mixed with a half cup hot (not boiling) water and whisked or blended to a thick, creamy consistency before applying to clean hair. Cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap and keep moist for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing out. One application makes enough for one treatment for a person with long hair. This is a preservative free product, so should be mixed shortly before being used. Use once a month or as needed.

Organic honey powder, conditioning ingredients naturally derived from rapeseed and coconut oil, dehydrated aloe vera powder, coconut milk powder, Vitamin B-5 (Panthenol), guar gum.

Mustache Wax (Choose your scent)
Mystic Water Soap beard and mustache care now includes this medium-firm hold neutral colored natural mustache wax, to tame your ‘stache, make it stay where you want it and maintain its shape. To apply, scrape a small amount (equal to a couple of grains of rice) from the surface of the wax with the back of your thumbnail. Rub it between thumbs and index fingers to soften it with your body heat and then apply to your mustache. Does a great job of taming unruly eyebrows too! Available Unscented or lightly scented with Bay Rum, Barbershop, or my Cedar & Sage essential oil blend. Size: .75 oz in a slip tin

Vinegar rinses

If you've read much about shampoo bars, you've probably seen vinegar rinses mentioned and wondered whether it was worth the trouble. The reason to do it is simple: all soap, including soap-based shampoo bars, has an alkaline pH while your hair and skin have a slightly acidic pH. By using a small amount of diluted vinegar (either white or apple cider vinegar) in the final rinse, you are helping to restore a healthy acid balance to your hair and scalp. It helps remove any traces of soap and can make your hair look shiner by making the hair cuticle lie flat. If you have short hair, you might not feel that you need to use the rinse, if you have long hair I would urge you to try it - it will make your hair more manageable and it won't smell like vinegar when it dries. The amount you use depends on the hardness of your water and the length of your hair, but two tablespoons per pint of water is a good place to start.

Sorry, I am not shipping vinegar rinses at this time.
